Last post of 2009!

I felt like I should get one more post in in 2009, but I don't have anything non work related from the last two weeks. Except for this silly comic. So here you go. Happy New Year!

Poor neglected blog - here's a new picture

I've been posting to Phil's Christmas everyday, which means this poor blog has gotten very sad and neglected. So here are two versions of a doodle I did today, plus a bit of homework that's still really rough.

Oh yeah, and we had homework in my other class to do Lucy and Mr Tumnus meeting on the lantern waste. I want to redo the trees.

Books came out this week!

I have illustrated a children's book and it just came in this week! It looks great, the print quality is fantastic, the paper just feels really good. I'll update you when I know more about the ordering information, since it appears that you can't order it from Amazon quite yet... But the amazon link is here. The author is also giving to a lot of good causes, which you can check out here.

Phil's Christmas continued!

Phil has arrived at the north pole and run into a sea monster!

the rest of the series is over at Phil's Christmas

Phil's Christmas

So, it started last year, and we're doing it again this year - my sister and I do an advent countdown with our character Phil the penguin. You can see it all happen over at Phil's Christmas

Mountain sketch

A little sketch using a technique to get started that we learned in Environment Design the other day. Pretty fun. My other experiment with it for the night was less fruitful, but still fun.

Something is coming in DECEMBER!!!

A preview of things to come in December perhaps?? HMMMMMM? Hehehe
Also, that was my first try with a little phototexturing. I felt dirty and immediately painted over almost all of it, haha. It did give me some nice random shapes in a time when I was stuck.
Some homeworks in progress (HWIP I shall call them from now on). This first one is a game level design. It's painted over a mesh that they gave us. It was just a wireframe of blocks basically. We had to come up with how the level would go. I went with circus/old timey theater with a touch of steampunk. There would be a creature in that cage and once you solve the puzzle to open the cage using the chains and stuff it would come out.

And here is John Carter discovering stuff in a cave.

Miner camp

man, classes and work have been keeping me super busy! Here is some homework from Production Design - a color version and the value study. I sketched some props over it real quick to see what I want to do, I'm a little worried that maybe they are all too much the same size? Or maybe it's just that they're all in that corner. I feel like I need something in the open area, but I can't figure out what. I had a fire pit for a while, but it stopped things up too much. Maybe I'll move the rifle over there.

A rainy day

And because Emily Su asked for it, a larger version of that Planet Earth study. It's still pretty small - it wasn't a very big study.

Environment Design Homework and Planet Earth studies

This was the homework for the first week of my environment design class.

And here are some studies off of Planet Earth. I've been doing so much stuff out of my head, I felt like I needed to do some studies to remind me of what real lighting looks like. It wasn't my best day ever for doing studies, but at least it's something, right?

Sunset house

an experiment in making things look watercolor-ish in Photoshop. I'm not sure I'm actually interested in getting it to look exactly like watercolor (then wouldn't I just use watercolor?) so much as making things look a little more physical.

Polluted city

Basically the opposite of my last post.

Steamer

I was tired after the beach today and just doodling. I've been looking at a lot of stuff relating to The Secret of Kells in the past couple days - their production blog is really interesting. I guess that sort of wore off on me, not so much the stylized shapes (their use of stylized shapes is really masterful) as the flattened perspective and the even lines.

Finished the moomins!

Alright, here are the last six panels + all of them laid out so you can see the whole thing.

Second to last set of moomins!

I've realized that these red ones show up really badly on mac monitors (or at least on my laptop monitor) - if you see them on a PC or non-apple monitor, that's what they're supposed to look like. Probably. The difference between the monitors hasn't been bugging me as much on the rest of these, just the red ones.

And some more moomins!

Almost done with these things! Probably one more set.

Another moomin + anger

Just the one moomin color today because I spent the rest of my time doing paid work! :gasp!: And I'm mad because I finished said work for the day and want to watch Veronica Mars (I just got to season 2!), but my computer has decided it's not having any of this DVD business. I drew this on my second monitor, and I realized my drawing of me was literally staring at the cd drive of the laptop next to the monitor. Fin, ever the loyal dog, is also angry.

Even more Moomins + a beach

Same deal as the last post - these are the next four.

I keep doing stuff with basically this color scheme. I need to branch out. But I'm still relatively happy with it.

More moomins!

Color for some story beats of Comet in Moominland.

Colors from Norcal

Just got back from a couple days up north. I forgot my camera, so I'm just going off what I remember it looking like. It was so pretty - I think it'd be fun to go up there and paint. I did some little sketches while out hiking - I might scan those at some point. The first is from when the sun was setting on the way from the Desolation Wilderness to Silver Lake. The second is very loosely based on that giant rock at Morrow Bay on the central coast. That thing is really cool.

Miss Patty out for a walk

There's a whole story with Miss Patty now. I won't get into it. You may remember I posted Miss Patty's Home for Wayward Dogs a while ago (or maybe you don't). Well, I think the city she lives in kind of sucks - it's grey and cold and in the mountains. But not fun mountains that you can ski and hike on. Crappy mountains that block in the town so everything is close and grubby. So here's Miss Patty out for a walk in town. Mostly as a color study. Did I go overboard on the textures? Probably. But I liked it because when I made it black and white and upped the curves it looked like bad xerox. Apparently bad xerox is an aesthetic I'm into now?

Afternoon Walk

I was walking my dog this afternoon and this is what I remember it looking like.

Rough color for treehouse

Super rough color tests for the treehouse. My teacher pointed out that I should add some cast shadows to make it clear that the treehouse is resting on the tree, so if that's unclear right now, that's why.

Homeworks from classes

Linework for a treehouse, a rough for an overly grand child's bedroom, and tone studies for that fisherman's cottage I posted a while back.
