Phil's Advent

Phil's advent is moving to its own blog - it's easier that way - then they aren't scattered all over this one.

Advent: Day 1

So my sister has started sending me daily prompts about what Phil the penguin is doing for advent, and I am to draw them. Hooray for sisterly Christmas fun!

"Dec 1st:
On the first day of advent, Phil decided to start the preparations with cookies, Jesus likes cookies right? Unfortunately, its hard to crack an egg when all you have is flippers...."

Another Kung Fu Panda study

This time I was trying to simplify and work with values.

Kung Fu Panda

I hadn't done any drawing in a couple days, so before I started drawing for work, I did a couple warm up color studies from Kung Fu Panda. I love that movie, plus it has such great color.

Farm morning

We took a train from Bordeaux to Paris at an obscenely early hour. But man, it was pretty. Watching the sun come up over the misty french countryside was so beautiful that I didn't even go back to sleep until about 9:30 or 10. At first all you could see was this blue-grey color. Then slowly shapes began showing up in the mist and eventually you could occasionally see trees, farmhouses, and occasionally cars before it would all disappear as the train sped past. This is what I remember it looking like as the sun rose enough that we could actually see some detail outside.

Sketchcrawl and France

Yesterday was the world sketchcrawl, as some of you know. I headed down to Marina Del Rey to go on my very first official sketch crawl! It was fun, got to meet some people, draw some stuff. Here are a couple of sketches from that. I'm still figuring out these watercolor pencils. They're pretty fun, and such an easy way to do color on the go.

Also, I recently went to France to visit my sister who is studying in Nantes. Nantes has the machines de l'ile, which has an awesome mechanical elephant that people can ride on/in, the coolest steampunky merry-go-round I've ever seen, and a weird "treehouse" type thing made of metal. So below are some of the animals from the merry-go-round, as well as the view from our hotel window because I woke up early and had nothing to do. I wish I'd drawn the merry-go-round and elephant more, but it was cold, and I'm an LA wuss now.

Spaceships!

I don't really like the timing on this, but I was having some with some spaceships. I think I want to do a better aftereffects spaceship thing - it's really fun!

Griffith Park Observatory

This is basically the view of the observatory I see when I run up my street. I was out running tonight and there were flocks of pigeons flying around. It was pretty cool.

In other news I just got back from France, and I'll be posting my sketches from there soon. I've gotten spoiled by LA weather, and totally wimped out on sketching in the cold.

Monkey Dare

Nature fact: Monkeys like to make dares, and they don't have too much sense.

I've been doing so much in the last week!

I'm working on a portfolio to apply for some visual development internship/apprenticeship type things. One of the deadlines is really soon, another is a ways off. This is pretty much what I've got so far. There's also a page of rough color keys and frames from a title sequence I've been working on, figure drawings, and animal drawings from the zoo (or based on animals from the zoo). I think I'm also going to be including some images I've already posted on my blog, so I didn't repost them here - but it'll probably be the Sifakas, Phil the penguin jumping into the water, the lighthouse on the island, the snowbeast and the guy jumping off the waterfall. I have no idea how many people actually look at this blog - but if you see any big weak points/obvious gaps, please let me know.

And I'm not too sure about including these lamps

Whooo!

I really liked this as a super rough, and as I cleaned it up, it started losing something... and I didn't even clean it up that much, I guess. This is hardly a polished work. I feel like I'm not really too sure how to finish pieces.

Knight

I think I wish I'd gone with no outlines on this one, but it kind of evolved without me thinking about it. I was just drawing with no goal in mind. I need to start working on portfolio stuff when I'm not working on this other project.

Ear Upgrade

I dunno where all these line drawings are coming from all of a sudden. I think it's because the project I'm working on is so much the opposite of line drawings.

Sad Tiger

Star Wars

The animajors topic this week is Star Wars. I wasn't so happy with my first contribution, so I started doodling mini versions of the characters. Then the ships. I tried to see how many things I could remember from the original trilogy without looking up pictures of anything. It was tough - there's no Ewok because I kept drawing Ewoks that looked like the sheriff of nottingham mixed with a hamster. And there's no full body Stormtrooper because I was having trouble remembering how their armor segments. I couldn't remember how to draw Boba Fett for pete's sake!
Kudos to anyone who can name everything on this page. I mean, it's all pretty basic stuff - but kudos to you if you can figure out my inaccurate drawings!

Oh my god! Didn't you bring a map?!

This bird hates winter

Poor bird, it's starting to snow. Clearly wishful thinking on my part however - September in LA is not a snowy season. Well, any month in LA is not snowy.

Geometrees!

A bear among the geometrees
Saw the movie "Beautiful Losers" today - if you get the chance to see it, I recommend it. It totally inspired me to want to make more stuff.

Pirate

Here's a pirate jumping from ship to ship. I'm working on another project which always makes me get sidetracked and do other drawings. I wish I'd gotten her legs more right, but I like the rest. Even though you'd think as someone who loves doing backgrounds I would have spent some time on the background here, haha. Oh well - it's just a sketch.

Phil in France

Laura is off to France for a semester! Wow! So naturally Phil is going there as well. That penguin sure likes wine... but really, who doesn't.

Zombie Gangster

I didn't do the last two animajors topics, so I combined them into one. This morning I was pondering why he doesn't really look like a zombie and I realized he's way too active to be a zombie. So keep in mind - this is an extra undead zombie.

Olympics

No, not the sports kind - the mountain kind. We went hiking over in the Olympics yesterday. It was so pretty and the weather was perfect. So this is sort of based on that. Expect probably two more in the same vein - but perhaps with more of a story. There was a really cool dry stream bed that was filled with mossy rocks that I want to draw and also some awesome fallen trees with cool roots. Hurrah!

Phil

My sister and I realized that Phil is most likely an Adelie penguin, so I decided I should start drawing him like that. I'm not so thrilled with the composition here, but I like how Phil came out.

Edit:
I just changed it so that the ice is pushed over to the left and now I like the composition a lot better

Sifakas!

Sifakas are my very favorite animal at the zoo lately (half grown tiger cubs are a close second). They are endlessly entertaining - always jumping around and performing ridiculous acrobatics. I went to the zoo the other day and drew them for a while. I happened upon those sketches just now so I did this. Hooray for the zoo!
