Practice from reference

Just doing some speedies from reference. Both are from National Geographic's galleries. That site has a wealth of pretty things to look at.

Bee race

there's a pretty good chance the colors on this are going to look completely nuts - they look normal to me in painter and preview, but crazy oversaturated in photoshop. And I don't really know which program is telling the truth.

Gull ship

part of my color-sketch-a-day thing.

Rabbit Army

I'm not really terribly happy with this one - the scale/perspective are way off. I like the colors, but I think they're probably going to look crazy intense on other monitors because reds always seem to show up differently on other monitors than they do on mine.

Monkey, meet Butterfly

Originally it was just a monkey sitting there, but that was a little boring. I was going to have him meeting a robot, but then I got lazy and went with butterfly.

House in the Woods

I saw this french horror animation thing at the LA Film Fest and I had to start creating something creepy. I think I know where this story is going - here are the first four panels.

Old Cat and a Forest Church Thing

I was working on this forest church thing for my background portfolio, but it's not really going where I want it to. So I took a break and drew a grizzled old cat. I think the background drawing just needs more contrast and a lot more work. I have so much trouble when I actually try to finish something - it looked so good in the color key phase. I'll post it when I actually finish.

Canyon BG

Just putting my background portfolio stuff together, made a canyon. I scanned a storyboard panel I had for a bird flying and used that background as the basis for this. So, final first, storyboard after.

Bit o' ToonBoom fun

Wolf in the woods from EmilyT on Vimeo.

Just playing around in ToonBoom. I even went and made a quick little background. Boy, I really like doing backgrounds - I think I should start applying for those jobs too.

Giraffe

I went to the zoo today and drew. But I don't have a scanner here, so I drew this giraffe in Painter.

Tarzan

Supposed to be studying for geology. Ended up drawing Tarzan. These were like... one minute drawings. If that.

His legs looked a little girly to me here, so I put hair on 'em.

Fighting a jaguar.

Something's going on below the trees, whaa?

I'm afraid it's probably painfully obvious that all my knowledge of Tarzan comes from Disney. Oh dear.

It's a Jungle Out There

I won't apologize for my cheesy post title. I seem to be all about the jungles lately. If these images look a little grey, my big monitor seems to have a green cast to it. Or maybe my laptop has a grey cast.

This one is for the animajors blog. The prompt was "She rarely moved unless the handle turned. Then she struck like lightning." It was a bit of an experiment for me.

No jungles here. I think I've been looking at Yacin's storyboards too much. I want to be that cool.

And a close-up which I think I like better.

Floating Castles

Floating castles with skyways and airships. I think I'm going to do this again, but better. These colors turned out mushy. It'll give me a chance to do a better composition too. But I like the idea of roads in the sky.

Blue Forest

Monster in a blue forest. The first one looks right on my big NEC monitor, the second looks right on my little powerbook monitor. The upside of this dual monitor setup is that I can test what colors look like on different monitors, the downside is that then I want it to look the same on all monitors.
